Follow these steps to protect your herd, access financial support, and get your restriction lifted as quickly as possible.
These animals are the main source of infection to other animals – isolate immediately to prevent further infections.
You will receive a call from the BVD Help Desk and a letter. During the call you will nominate a trained vet.
Both moves in and out of the herd are restricted.
Movements out to non-breeding herds may be possible under a permit from your local Veterinary Office.
Your neighbours within 400m will be notified.
To prevent further infections and to obtain the highest level of financial support from DAFM:
Dairy: €160 for dairy heifers and dairy cross animals removed within 10 days. €30 if removed 11–21 days after the initial test.
Beef: €220 if removed within 10 days. €30 if removed 11–21 days after the initial test.
All of the following must be completed before the herd restriction can be lifted:
Pre-movement tests will apply to positive herds once the herd restriction has been lifted. These will be introduced gradually, and every herd will be made aware of the arrangements at that time.
Females that were in-calf at the time of removal of the virus positive animal(s):
• Must not be sold while in calf
• Calf must be born and tested before sale
Buildings and handling facilities that may have been contaminated should be cleaned and disinfected as soon as is practicable but in advance of the next breeding season.
All breeding animals aged 12 months and above are eligible for a second round of DAFM-funded vaccination the following year. Vaccinate before the start of the next breeding season – this may be earlier than 12 months since the last vaccination round.
Almost 1 in 4 herds that had a BVD+ calf will have another one the following year due to environmental contamination. Virus shedding is massive and persists for weeks.
Critical for calving areas, calf sheds, and feeding equipment.
