What happens if you get a BVD-virus positive result?

Follow these steps to protect your herd, access financial support, and get your restriction lifted as quickly as possible.

Immediate Actions
Requirements to Lift Restriction

All of the following must be completed before the herd restriction can be lifted:

Step 1
Whole Herd Test
All animals present, including recently born calves, must be blood sampled and tested. Blood samples must be taken at least 4 weeks after removal of the last virus positive animal.
Step 2
Vaccination
All breeding animals over 12 months of age will be vaccinated by your nominated vet. Do this as soon as possible – ideally 3-4 weeks before breeding for maximum protection.
Step 3
BVD Consultation
Your nominated vet will carry out a funded TASAH consultation to identify the source of the outbreak and make farm-specific recommendations to prevent re-infection.
Important Information
24%

Re-infection Risk

Almost 1 in 4 herds that had a BVD+ calf will have another one the following year due to environmental contamination. Virus shedding is massive and persists for weeks.

5-Step Cleaning & Disinfection Protocol

Critical for calving areas, calf sheds, and feeding equipment.

Step 1
Protect Yourself
Wear gloves, masks, and waterproof aprons to reduce pathogen exposure.
Step 2
Dry Cleaning
Remove all visible debris, manure, and organic material (walls, floors, crevices).
Step 3
Wet Wash
High-pressure wash with detergent to remove fats/grease pre-disinfection.
Step 4
Disinfection
Use DAFM approved disinfectant. Contact time is critical for virus elimination.
Step 5
Drying
Rinse and let dry completely. Leave pens empty for a period before restocking.
